SAVE THE DATE!Wednesday, March 26, 2008
Since November 30, 2007, the District of Columbia community has been bombarded with threats of school closings, and other acts of unwarranted hostility and aggression. Furthermore, the information coming from Mayor Adrian Fenty and Chancellor Michelle Rhee's office is confusing and often times contradictory.
Many of us don't know what to believe. Misinformation is rampant. It is time for us all to get crystal clear and to receive a full understanding of the chronology and the underlying implications of this Fenty-Rhee school closing situation.
Once we become knowledgeable and active on the issues, then we can empower ourselves collectively to Save Our Neighborhood Schools!

The purpose of this critically important "teach-in" is to comprehensively educate and inform our community about all of the issues surrounding the school closure crisis and to offer an alternative to the poorly conceived plan to hastily and abruptly close 21 schools and restructure 27 others.

On Thursday, January 31, 2008 We Turned-Out for the Stay Out No More "Taxation Without Expectation!"
Thousands of people all over the country “walk-out” of their schools to protest injustice. Let us stay-out or walk-out together. Every District of Columbia public school belongs to the people, and we have the power!
Taxpaying District citizens will not allow the Fenty, Rhee, Reinoso Machine to destroy our public school system with a poorly conceived proposal to randomly, hastily and abruptly close 23 schools and restructure 27 more schools by August 2008. We will remember in November: no more "Taxation Without Expectation!"
The speed with which mayor Adrian Fenty's school closing process is occurring is not only truly immoral, callous, insensitive and contemptuous, it is in stark violation of federal regulations under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) statutes. Under NCBL, all public school closures require use of very specific criteria and steps before a school is closed. This is not what this mayor has done, nor does it appear to be what Fenty will do.
The Mayor’s actions are in full violation of federal law! This critical issue affects every resident in every ward of the District of Columbia. My child’s schools today, then your child’s schools tomorrow! “Our lives begin to end the day that we become silent about things that matter.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
BOYCOTT "23" ON JANUARY 17
An Absolute Success Attended By More Parents Than the Separate "Rhee 23" Meetings Combined!
Parents, Teachers and Students United. Boycott "23" (Thursday evening, January 17, 2008) was a clear first victory of the real citizen organization and power we all have and will effectively use to enforce genuine and complete accountability at every level of District governance — especially from every publicly paid elected and appointed District of Columbia government official. As a result, the People's Meeting at the John A. Wilson Building was supported and attended by councilmembers Marion Barry, Harry Thomas Jr., Yvette Alexander, Carol Schwartz, and Kwame Brown. This is just the beginning. District government and numerous local D.C. special interests news media outlets heard our clear and strong message: One voice and one city for every District public school. "Make no mistake, don't be fooled. They're about condos, we're about schools."
